恒星は温度によりO、B、A、F、G、K、Mのスペクトル型に、大きさにより矮星・巨星・超巨星に分類されます。実際によく使われるのは、赤色矮星、太陽型の主系列星、赤色巨星、青色超巨星、そして水素核融合に至らない亜恒星天体である褐色矮星です。
質量により4種類に分けられます。星の崩壊でできる太陽質量の3〜150倍の恒星質量ブラックホール、100〜10万倍の中間質量ブラックホール、銀河中心の超大質量ブラックホール、そしてビッグバン直後の1秒以内に生じたとされる仮説上の原始ブラックホールです。
どちらも崩壊した恒星の中心核ですが、中性子星にはまだ表面があります。中性子の縮退圧と強い相互作用が、直径約22kmで支えているのです。約2.3太陽質量を超えると重力に抗える力はなくなり、事象の地平面を越えて崩壊が続き、ブラックホールになります。
質量次第です。約8太陽質量までの星は赤色巨星に膨らみ、外層を放出して白色矮星を残します。より重い星は超新星として爆発し、中性子星を残します。崩壊する中心核が約2.3太陽質量を超えるとブラックホールになります。
イラストではなく物理から作られています。ブラックホールのシーンはシュヴァルツシルト時空で光の経路を積分しており、影、光子リング、レンズ効果で歪んだ降着円盤、相対論的ドップラー増光、アインシュタインリングはすべて計算結果です。恒星は温度に基づく色、周縁減光、対流による粒状斑を用いています。大きさは見やすさのための構図であり、実スケールではありません。
