What Atla Regio is

Atla Regio is a regio — a large area distinguished by its brightness or colour — on Venus, 3,200 km across, centred at 9.2° N, 159.9° W in the Atla Regio quadrangle. It is the 23rd largest named feature on Venus and the 4th largest of its class there.

Where the name comes from

Norse giantess, mother of Heimdall. The International Astronomical Union approved the name in 1982, under the theme it applies to every regio on Venus. Of the 19 features of this class catalogued on Venus, the naming categories run Greek (7), Norse (5), American (2), Mari (1).
