Martian Dust: Global Storms and Perchlorate Poison

Planet-encircling dust events occur roughly every three Mars years — about five and a half Earth years. During one, atmospheric opacity rises enough to cut solar power output dramatically and to drop surface illumination to a permanent dim orange twilight. The 2018 global storm ended the Opportunity rover after fifteen years of operation, simply by starving it of sunlight.

The chemistry is the second problem. Martian soil contains perchlorate salts at roughly 0.5 to 1 percent by weight, first detected by Phoenix in 2008. Perchlorates disrupt thyroid function in humans and are toxic to most crops, which makes dust control a life-support problem rather than a housekeeping one. Every airlock is a contamination boundary.

The physical properties are as bad as the chemistry. The grains are fine, angular and electrostatically charged, so they adhere to everything, work into seals and bearings, scratch visors and camera optics, and coat solar panels. Apollo learned the lesson on the Moon; Martian dust is finer and comes with wind to distribute it.

The mitigations are all partial: electrostatic and vibration-based panel cleaning, dust-tolerant seals, suitport designs that keep the suit outside the habitat entirely, and nuclear power that does not care about opacity. Dust is not a problem anyone solves; it is a tax paid by every subsystem forever.

The dust cycle can be used

The same global circulation that makes storms is what would distribute engineered warming aerosols planet-wide from a single surface release point.

Perchlorates are a resource

Perchlorate is an oxidiser and a source of chlorine and oxygen. Extracting it solves a toxicity problem and produces useful chemistry at the same time.

It is well characterised

Decades of orbiters and surface missions have measured composition, particle size and storm behaviour. Nothing here is a surprise waiting to happen.

The case against

It kills solar power exactly when it matters

A planet-encircling storm cuts array output for months. Opportunity did not survive the 2018 event. Any solar-only base needs storage or backup sized for a season of twilight.

Perchlorates are toxic to people and crops

At 0.5–1 wt% in the regolith, perchlorate disrupts thyroid function and poisons most plants, making every soil and every dust ingress a medical issue.

It destroys mechanisms

Fine, angular, statically charged grains work into seals, bearings and optics. Every moving part exposed to Mars has a dust-limited lifetime.

It buries anything laid on the ground

Aerogel sheets, solar arrays and greenhouse glazing all depend on transparency, and dust deposition steadily removes it.
